The energy performance certificate (or EPC) is the result of an European directive stating that by 2009 all buildings will require a classification according to the buildings overall energy efficiency and it's impact upon the environment.

For homeowners the government have decided to introduce this directive as part of the home information pack or Hip. This is not a bad thing as it will enable prospective buyers to compare the energy efficiency of a potential home before they buy it or even put in an offer. The EPC will also provide clear, simple advice on improvements that might be made to the home.
